I didn’t grow up as a ‘car guy.’ My dad was a handyman and taught me the value of fixing things yourself, but my real automotive education started out of pure necessity. When my wife and I had our first child, our budget got a lot tighter, and our trusty old minivan seemed to know it.

The turning point came one sweltering summer afternoon when the van died in a grocery store parking lot. The repair quote from the local garage was more than we could comfortably afford, and I felt completely powerless. I decided right then that I wasn’t going to let that happen again. I bought a repair manual, borrowed some tools, and spent a whole weekend under the hood. When I finally turned the key and the engine roared to life, the feeling was incredible.
